General Utilities

Here we have a special class of software covering a wide range of utilities and other goodies. These are usually small software packages geared to a special purpose. It will be an on-going work as items will be added or removed. In addition to what is listed here, other similar items are available and will be added when tested.

Starting with Microsoft Windows Live Essentials, as mentioned on another page, this is a group of utilities from Microsoft, available as a complete package, a subset  or a single item. You may want them all or just one or two. There is one set for Windows XP and another for Windows Vista and Windows 7.
For the complete list and details, go to Windows Live Essentials using the links on the left or above. Each item can be downloaded separately or as a complete package. The Windows Live Mail item is an email client that runs locally on your computer and downloads your mail from your provider's server. It is the replacement for Windows Mail that was used in Vista but dropped in Windows 7. The 2001 and XP versions are for their respective systems only. The 2011 version adds several new items not in the XP version.

There is a series of programs from Adobe that are quite useful and often necessary to have installed on your system. Adobe Reader is used to access documents of the type PDF (Portable Document Format). There is a version for all operating systems. The HPRA web site uses a number of this type of file. It is often supplied with software packages, so you may already have it.  Adobe Flash is a special video player used to play videos and slide shows. We use this on the home page to present the ship slide show and the Slide Show and Album page. Adobe Air is used with some Web applications. If if it is needed, you will be prompted to download and install it. Some software may do it automatically. Adobe Shockwave is another a web application item. It will be installed if  needed. (Warning: if you download these from the Adobe site, there is a check box about McAfee Security Scan Plus you may want to un-check.) You can read more about each item on the Adobe web page associated with them. Just click the links on the left. All of these are free.
