In the MS Windows environment, the first
three are the most popular and all four are available for the Apple MAC
computers. In the Windows environment, Internet Explorer is the default
browser, unless set to a different one by the user. IE used to be
tightly tied to the Windows operating system, but due to legal rulings
in Europe, it had to be un-bundled. The titles above are links to their
download sites. With IE you will get version 9. For earlier versions,
click the ones in the parentheses. IE9 only works in Windows Vista and
Windows 7. IE8 will work with Windows XP and later.
Firefox, Chrome and Safari are less
dependent on the Windows versions, but you may
have problems in Windows 98 should you still use that.
Any of the browsers can be set to be the
one that starts when you select a link in an email or other program.
The one you use is really up to your own personal preferences. In
various reviews, one may be thought of as the best choice. Some think
IE should be the choice, others think it should be Firefox, Chrome etc.
A lot of web sites may have items that work better in one than another.
Like said; it is your own choice. When creating pages for
HughPurvis.Com, they are first tested using IE (version 8) as it is the
default on the developer PC. Once a page is well along in the design
cycle, it is tested using the other three. All pages are eventually
tested in IE versions 7, 8 and 9 and Firefox versions 3, 4 and 5. With
Chrome and Safari only the latest is used.
